Web_design_skills
Often times, individuals and businesses do not want to outsource their web development jobs to an agency; if you are one of them, this article will give you some tips on how to develop certain skills needed to crack the nut. Continue reading to know the most basic skills one needs to possess.

  • Knowing HTML will give you a clearer understanding of how the web works, even if your plan is on using WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors such as Dreamweaver, MS Frontpage, etc. . HTML will make your designs more effective. A good place to get started is http://www.w3schools.com/
  • The second important skill a Web designer needs, is to know CSS. It is an important language you should learn to tweak any template which you may want to customize. CSS determines how a page will look and powers a design.
  • You should be a Logical thinker apart from the technical ability you have. You must be able to visualize simple elements of the webpage such as the placement of the logo, the header images, navigation bar, etc.
  • You should be creative in your thinking, this will ensure that your website stands out from the competition. Get out of the box and think of how your website design can stand out, it could be simple things like using unique pictures, adding unique features or even making a simple website that can make your website stand out from the crowd!
  • In order to create interesting sites one can use Flash as it can add some cool animation to your Web pages. However, it is recommended that in this age you make a user-friendly and a less “Flashy” website. Using Flash scarcely will help search engines find your website easily for relevant keywords or your company’s name.
  • More than anything else, you need to be focused on getting the job done. Often times, in the process of designing your website, you get carried away with various tips and tricks on the net. Set a deadline and get the job done! You can always get back to your website and add features or pages but getting a basic website in place might be more important for your business than making the “perfect” website.

Do you have all your content ready before your get your website made?

Often times, your website design project comes to a halt because you did not consider all the content that will go on to the design. Before you compile all your content about your company for the website. It may be a useful idea to consider the layout items:

  • Header (the top most part of the page) includes company logo, some images and the navigation bar (which could be vertical or horizontal)
  • Body (the center part of the page) includes clients content i.e. a brief write up of the company or the primary information of that page that your website visitor will see.
  • Footer (the end of the page) includes copy write text plus hyperlinks to each page.

Questions to ask before you build your website

Business-plan-woman-whiteboard

  • First ask yourself, what kind of a website are you going to build? Is it going to be a blog or a website for your existing business?

  • What is the goal of building your website? For some, it might be simply to showcase their online portfolio, for others it might be an e-commerce portal. Jot down your goals on a document to get a clear idea of what features you might want from your website

  • Have you decide which content needs to be displayed on your website? Make sure you compile all your content before you start designing the website

  • Have you sketched a design that is in your mind on the computer or a piece of paper. You can also use Powerpoint to make a mock-up of the website before you give it to a professional designer. Collect some images that your brand or you can relate to that you could use on your website if you want.

  • Have you considered which pages will go on a website? Eg. Portfolio gallery,a blog section, product pages.

The haughty businessman

A young businessman had just started his own firm. He rented a beautiful office and had it furnished with antiques. Sitting there, he saw a man come into the outer office. Wishing to appear the hot shot, the businessman picked up the phone and started to pretend he had a big deal working. He threw huge figures around and made giant commitments. Finally he hung up and asked the visitor, "Can I help you?" The man said, "Yeah, I've come to activate your phone lines."

Joy of meeting Entrepreneurs

One of the best parts about my job is the fact that it gives me the opportunity to meet interesting entrepreneurs, discuss exciting new ideas and often some bizzare ones too. Today I met with two such entrepreneurs and we spoke at length about social media engagement strategies, pay-per-click campaigns and that led us to discuss in-depth about their business and marketing objectives. Not so surprisingly, we ended up discussing the impact on the bottomline. However, both entrepreneurs were also passionate about how web marketing is integral to their brand identity. Often times, this is considered to be a catch 22 situation by many small businesses but the truth is that in the long run, what matters is what your brand stands for. Anyway, that is a story for another day.

For being someone who is responsible for business development, it could get frustrating to just 'discuss' ideas but not often being able to make a sale. So what keeps people like me going? It's often times the enthusiasm of this budding entrepreneur, his determination to try out something new and the adventurous zeal of creating something unique that gets me going! When someone's bitten by the entrepreurial bug, it's hard for them to stop talking about the dream until it becomes a reality. Most prospects I meet are bitten by this bug and that makes the meeting even more interesting. Often times, the meeting itself is rewarding for us - because it gives us a better understaning of a specific industry vertical or a new product category.

We strive hard to bring our cient's zeal on to our drawing boards to make the next big brand on the web. That's the joy that keeps Webventurous going!
